This is my fourth visit to Geneva, three of which involve milestones in the life of my godson Michael. In 1985 we traveled here for his christening -- and to actually meet his adorable 6 month old self. The second was a hastily arranged trip (his 14 year old self had procrastinated the invitation duties) for his confirmation in 1998. Another visit in the early 2000s coincided with a walk on the Camino. And this visit to meet his fiancée who he will marry in her German hometown this summer. Spending time with young couples who are so in love and so devoted is such a pleasure. He and Karoline are highly intelligent, working with NGOs addressing human rights, migrations, and capacity building for conflict resolution internationally -- with a focus on the Middle East. At the same time they are funny, playful, and completely accessible. It is such an honor to have had this role in Michael's life and to have experienced him at these intervals. And despite the infrequency of contact and a role that is largely symbolic, we have a deep fondness for one another. I am very grateful to his amazing parents, Rick and Philippa for choosing me.
